Our TV is a GE that's about 15 or so years old. It has developed a
problem where the remote only works part of the time. New batteries in
both remotes we have. And both remotes still operate other devices
when the TV won't work. Power on/off, channel, and volume are all
affected. The buttons on the TV itself will work when the TV doesn't
respond to the remote. So, I'm thinking that it might be the IR
recieving module. Any suggestions?

Check for cold solder connections under the IR receiver module in the set,
and also check along its path to the controller. I have see these IR
receivers go defective, but not often.

If it's the model with the MTT001 or 002 tuner board, it's notorious for bad
connections causing int remote operation.

That could be something that fails after fifteen years, couldn't it?

Have ya recintly added some flourescent lighting i had a light bulb
conversion jamm my remote only would work if light was off
