What is the best thing for preventing rust inside computer?

Could you tell me if this white thing is rust or something else:

Wow was that on a boat or something? Yeah it looks like rust, what I would
do is take it all apart and sandblast the metal then repaint it, if you
don't have access to a sandblaster I would put all the metal parts through
the dishwasher to get them good and clean, then dry them out and paint the
internal metal with POR-15 anti-rust paint, that stuff is great. If you
can't find that, some spray on Hammerite is decent stuff. Really though,
buying a new case is probably the easiest way to go about this, they make
some nice aluminum ones now that won't rust.

I second that. If this is a garden-variety pc case, replace it; then do
something about the humidity (or rodent ;-) ) problem which caused it in the
first place. It's not just the case which will corrode, it will be any bare
metal (especially electrical contacts) exposed to the environment.

Ah, that explains it, I was thinking it was just a generic old PC. You can
get POR-15 from a place that sells automotive restoration products, such as
http://www.tptools.com, it's nasty stuff, be careful not to get it on your
skin. For your purposes you should be find if you scrub the rust off and
paint the metal with normal spraypaint in the color of your choice.

I've bought some acid (phosphor?). After trying it, it works good.
Should steel wool be used before or after the acid?
Also, I've bought zinc spray and some stuff for boats (called wash
primer-red color ).
The side of the that stuff-wash primer says it MUST be used with
solvent, but the salesman told me to use it directly. That worries me
a bit. Do you think it can be used without solvent?

I repaired an old HP ATX Style PC Case awhile back that I got for $.50
at the Dayton Hamvention by using Rust-O-Leum available at your local
autoparts store.

It wasn't very pretty to look at(It turned kind of blackish color after
applying the rust-o-leum), but it contained the rust. Virtually all of
the rust was on the inside so I didn't think that it'd bother. The rust
looked similiar to your 1st picture. It was just in patches/areas of
the case. I gave the case to my brother (after building it up into a
PC). Now, after reading this thread, I understand what might have
caused it.

The crux of preventing additional rust is to seal off its exposure to
air. Ideally you would want to remove as much as possible 1st. IIRC, I
used emery cloth to get some of the heavy build-up off 1st.
